The Dance

by Phoenix

Disclaimer: Luckily for Voltron, I don't own them. I just like to play with them. I also don't own this song by Garth Brooks. I would be alot richer if I did. This is the sequel to Today My World Slipped Away. It is more of a happy angst (Is there such thing as that?). ^_^

Looking back on the memory of
The dance we shared 'neath the stars above
For a moment all the world was right
How could I have known that you'd ever say goodbye

An old man with graying brown hair stood under a dying weeping willow. He was looking down at a tombstone, yellow roses in one hand and a cane in the other. With some difficulty he managed to kneel down so that he could sit next to the stone. His hand shaking, he placed the roses in front of the stone.

"Our two buddies are doing well. Their two foster sons and daughter have finished their military training on earth and returned here to be the next generation to fly the lions. The Princess's oldest son, the one named after you, is doing well flying the Black Lion. His twin sister flies the Red Lion, and she gives him as much trouble as I gave you."

Tears filled his eyes. "We all miss you. I miss you. Voltron has never been the same since you left."

And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance

"It has been so hard living each day without you. They say the pain gets easier with time, but it doesn't. It still hurts as much as the day it happened." With a sigh, he wiped his eyes and leaned back against the tree.

"I still remember the first day I met you." Closing his eyes, the old man couldn't help but smile at the memory. He was to meet the members of his new assignment and was running late. He turned the corner too fast and ran smack into another soldier. The impact sent them both crashing into a wall. When he finally managed to get his senses back from all the stars that flashed in his eyes, he lost them again as he gazed into a pair of twinkling black eyes.

He burst out laughing. "Imagine my surprise when I found out that you were my captain!"

Holding you I held everything
For a moment wasn't I a king
But if I'd only known how the King would fall
Hey whose to say you know I might have chanced it all

He treasured the memory of their first night together. It was like a dance the way they moved as one.....to music that only they could hear. He could still feel those arms wrap around him, as his lover's lips covered his own and filled him with all his fiery passion.

'I love you with all my heart and soul.' Those words echoed through his mind, deepening the pain in his weary heart as the wind gently blew the weeping willow's slender limbs against his face.

And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance

Tears ran down his checks. "I will never stop loving you." His heart and soul had died with his lover. All that was left was an empty shell, forced to carry on alone. But, someday they would be together once again. Even if he had to go through Hell to do it, he would just to look into those compassionate black eyes once again. "I swear I will find you, and then I will never let you go."

"Are you still waiting for me? Please wait for me my love." Tired, he closed his eyes as his body relaxed under the warm sunlight.

Yes my life is better left to chance
I could only have missed the pain but I'd of had to miss the dance

He opened his eyes to see the limbs of a young weeping willow. Startled he reached over to touch the stone, but it wasn't there. Jumping to his feet, searching for the precious stone, he looked down to see himself in his younger body.

"Lose something?"

He turned to see a pair of laughing black eyes. His eyes filled with tears as he rushed into his captain's open arms. He offered no resistance as those arms pulled him down onto his lover's body against the tree.

"I have been waiting for you. Welcome home my love." Those arms tightened around him as their lips closed together.

Around the lovers, the weeping willow's slender branches gently danced to the music in the warm breeze.
