Spend all your time waiting for that second chance
For a break that would make it okay.
There's always some reason to feel not good enough
And it's hard at the end of the day.
Scene opens to a shot of Keith and Lance violently arguing about
something. No words can be heard, but the actions are obvious. The
scene widens to show that they are in Castle Control surrounded by the
rest of the force, who are watching in fearful silence. Keith finally
grabs ahold of Lance's arms and swings him around, then lets go and
takes a step back at the look on Lance's face. Lance shakes him off
and runs for his lion. Keith just clenches his hands into fists and
watches him go. Hunk takes a step as if to follow Lance, then stops
and glances at Keith uncertainly. Pidge touches his arm, and he steps
back, still looking worried.
I need some distraction, oh beautiful release
Memories seep from my veins.
I may be empty and weightless and maybe
I'll find some peace tonight.
Scene changes to a shot of Keith, sitting in a dark, smoky bar,
wearing jeans and a button-up shirt. He's leaning against the bar
with his head on one of his hands, absently twirling a stir in a
half-full glass of amber liquid. Two empty glasses sit next to it.
Keith squeezes his eyes shut for a moment, then starts and looks up as
a stranger taps him on the shoulder. He stares blankly at the young
man for a moment, then shakes his head as if to clear it. Throwing
money down by his drink, he follows the stranger out of the bar, but
his eyes still look empty.
In the arms of the angel, fly away from here.
From this stark, cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear.
You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of the angel, may you find some comfort here.
Keith stands in the window of a hotel room in the middle of the night
wearing only his jeans. In the soft glare of the street light
outside, the circles under his eyes stand out on his pale face and he
looks too thin, as if he's lost a lot of weight quickly. He glances
once back towards the bed, where someone is asleep under a thin
blanket. In the shadows the person's face is totally obscured. Keith
reaches out a hand towards the bed involuntarily, then sinks down to
his knees by the window, wrapping his fingers around the cross
necklace he wears around his neck. The person in the bed, still
wreathed in shadows, sits up and looks at Keith as he closes his eyes
and bends his neck in silent prayer.
So tired of the straight line, and everywhere you turn
There's vultures and thieves at your back.
So you keep on twisting, keep on building the lies
That you make up for all that you lack.
The scene fades to a street in bright daylight. Keith is walking
with a paper bag of groceries in his arms, still in the same clothes
as the night before. The street could be a city street on any planet
populated by humans, with no distinguishing characteristics.
Everything's blurred around the edges, as if Keith really doesn't
notice it exists. A young boy dressed in black pulls out a gun and
aims it at Keith, gesturing threateningly. Keith stares back for a
moment, then turns and walks away. The boy stares in amazement.
Keith walks up the steps of an apartment building, smiling and
speaking to everyone he meets, but the smile never quite reaches his
eyes. No one seems to notice.
It don't make no difference, escape one last time
It's easier to believe.
In this sweet madness, oh, this glorious sadness
That brings me to my knees.
Keith balances the bag in his hand and opens up the door to a small
apartment. As he walks into the main room, we see that it is sparsely
furnished, with the blinds all tightly closed. He drops the bag on
the counter, then sinks down onto a chair. He bites his lip and looks
around the room, pausing as his eyes cross a small picture in a frame,
the only decoration in the room. Almost as if he can't help himself,
he reaches over and picks up the picture. As tears leak from his
eyes, he gently runs a finger down Lance's face before throwing the
frame across the room. The sound of breaking glass rings out as he
sinks off the chair onto his knees.
In the arms of the angel, fly away from here.
From this stark, cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear.
You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of the angel, may you find some comfort here.
Tears roll down Keith's face unnoticed as the scene fades to a
flashback. He stands again in Castle Control, holding a mike in his
hands and arguing with Lance, who is in Red Lion, on the view screen.
Keith keeps gesturing to the empty radar in front of him as he talks,
and Lance looks extremely frustrated. Suddenly, Lance looks away and
the view screen fades out to static. Keith freezes for a second,
glancing at the still-empty radar screen, then pounds on the control
panel and screams Lance's name. He runs out of the room to his lion,
followed by Hunk, Pidge, and Allura, who came running into the room at
the sound of Keith's scream. The scene blurs and is replaced by an
image of fighters attacking the castle. The four lions fight hard,
zigging in and out of laser fire, but finally prevail, although Red
Lion never comes to join them. The scene fades one more time to show
the wreckage of Red Lion in the mountains. Keith is sitting in front
of the lion, covered in blood, rocking Lance's broken body in his
arms. A med team arrives, and with Hunk's help, they finally pry
Lance's body from Keith's arms, but it's obviously too late. Allura
lays a hand on his shoulder gently, tears falling down her face, but
Keith stares up at the sky, oblivious to everyone around him.
You're in the arms of the angel, may you find some comfort here.
Keith walks over to the broken picture frame and picks up a shard of glass. He stands staring for a moment, holding the glass over his wrist. The glass drops from his fingers, and the scene changes to a church. Keith lights a candle at the altar, then drops down to his knees, folding his fingers over the cross again in prayer. Behind him, reflected transparently in a stained-glass window, Lance looks back over his shoulder at Keith, then smiles and winks at him. The scene fades out to blackness.
